Her Smile Lights Up A Room

Shunda was born on the floor of a small hut in the slums of Calcutta, India. Her father abandoned her when she was barley 5 years old. Her mother took her to live in the slums of Calcutta with her grandmother. Unfortunately, this slum was nestled on a rail road track and if living in the slums was not traumatizing enough, many neighbors lost their life to train accidents.

Shunda's mother only completed up until the 2nd grade. She was not educated by any standard. She did not know how to hold a pencil or sign her name. She used an ink pad to impress her finger for a signature. She was in survival mode to provide for Shunda but with no education she could only find a job as being someone's servant which did not pay much because there is not a minimum wage law in India. She was being taken advantage of for her hard work and from all the stress she carried her health was failing her.

Shunda stayed home with her grandmother while other children were in school. Her grandmother gave her chores to do in the home such as wash the clothes by hand, wash dishes, and fetch water. There was no time for her to go to school and learn, but only live out the centuries old cycle of poverty.

The reality for children born in developing countries like India is often a far cry from the standard of a developed country. The tragedy for untold millions of children living today is that they have never had one childhood experience that most of us have had, celebrating a birthday, receiving a gift from their parents, or flat out just going to school. In poverty when a child is born it’s a blessing and a curse. Parents saw your conception as more hands to work, but also more strain on the meager food supply.

Shunda, was small for her age because her mother lost her work during Covid, and she was unable to provide for her. Her growth was stunted, and her health was constantly failing her. It was a miserable situation. Her mother would constantly cry because she lost all hope….

When Samrat, the director of the LNFI Calcutta Project heard about the situation of Shunda and her family, he was burdened by the Lord to help. He made arrangements for Shunda to enter the LNFI Center where she could get help and begin to develop and grow. Shunda's life slowly began to change. She was now eating a nourishing meal each day. She no longer had to stay home all day and work. But she was in school learning. And she was learning about Jesus through kid's songs, Bible Stories, and the Word of God! She found hope.

God is able to work amazing transformation in the lives of such children, and we have seen Him using LNFI Projects to bring hope into their lives.

“You hear, O Lord the desire of the afflicted, you encourage them and you listen to their cry defending the fatherless and the oppressed. Psalm 10:17-18

With millions more children like Shunda today left to fend for themselves we need to stand in the gap for Jesus and help. Even if it's one child, you can make a difference.
